Disability Working Together Poster

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 gives disabled people rights in the way they receive goods, services or facilities. This Disability Awareness Poster is accepted by The Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH) as suitable for providing awareness of needs of disabled people and explaining the basic requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995).

This Disability Awareness Poster describes “a physical or mental impairment as a substantial and long term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities”. (DDA 1995)

The disability awareness poster also identifies such impairments:

  • Mobility
  • Sensory (e.g. sight or hearing)
  • Mental
  • Learning (e.g. involving reading or writing)

The disability awareness poster encourages staff not to treat disabled people less favourably because of their diability.

  • Make “reasonable adjustments” so there are no physical barriers for disabled people in terms of access and availability of services

  • Have procedures on how we approach disability requirements and make these available to all staff / monitor the performance of our practices / provide disability aids and services or alternatives means / make each step effective and practical

This diability awareness poster asks staff to adopt the right attitudes and consideration to all other employees and have particular consideration for disabled persons and their needs. Most people with disabilities just want obstacles removing and to be treated with respect.
